Property News - Ryder Cup could boost tourism in Spain

Spain has expressed its desire to host the showcase event of world golf, the Ryder Cup, in 2018.

The government has submitted a bid on the basis of potential tourism benefits, in addition the prestige of the tournament itself, reports the Associated Press.

Cultural and Tourism minister Santiago Fisas said the decision was "very important from the point of view of the economy and the repercussions it has", stating that Ireland generated £113 million when it staged the Cup in 2006.

He said similar success could be experienced in Spain if Madrid is announced as the successful host applicant when a decision is made in 2010.

Every two years, 12 European golfers compete against those from the USA for what is considered by many to be the premier representative tournament in the sport.

The USA emerged triumphant from this year's staging at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, ending a run of four successive losses stretching back to 1999.
